What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure performed to remove inflamed or infected pulp on the inside of the tooth, which is cleaned and disinfected, filled, and sealed. Root canal treatment will remove bacteria from the infected canal to prevent reinfection and save a patient’s natural tooth.

What to expect during a root canal treatment?

Inside your tooth, beneath the white enamel and a hard layer called dentin, is a soft tissue called pulp. This tissue contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue, which help grow the root of a tooth during development. A fully developed tooth needs to continuously be nourished by the tissue surrounding it.

The root canal procedure is like a routine filling. Sometimes a second appointment may be required. Depending on the tooth’s condition and a patient’s oral health, the procedure and treatment is relatively painless and extremely effective.
