What are tooth extractions and when are they necessary?
A tooth extraction is a procedure where the tooth is removed entirely from its socket. Many refer to this as the “pulling” of a tooth. Our staff strives to provide you with the best information regarding your teeth and patient care plan. Whenever possible, dentists strive to save natural teeth. Sometimes, restorative methods are not enough, and a tooth extraction may be necessary. Teeth extractions can occur when patients have:
- Severe tooth decay (cavities)
- Fractured tooth
- Crowded teeth
- Impacted tooth
- Severe gum disease
- Tooth luxation or dental injury

What to expect during your appointment?
Before a tooth extraction appointment occurs, patients will make an appointment with our dentists to assess the affected tooth and surrounding area of the gums. Dental x-rays can be taken at this point to assess for further damage. Once all information is collected from the assessment of the teeth and patient information, treatment and sedation options will be discussed.
During the tooth extraction, a local anesthetic will be administered to the affected area to numb the tooth and the gum tissue. Using specialized dental instruments, our dentists will gently loosen the tooth and carefully lift the tooth from its socket. Sometimes, dentists will need to make an incision in the gums to access the tooth. Once the tooth is removed, the socket will be disinfected and cleaned thoroughly. Lastly, if needed, stitches can be placed to promote proper healing.
When the procedure is complete, a dentist will place gauze over the extraction site and ask patients to close with firm, steady pressure to stop the bleeding. This allows for a blood clot to form. Blood clots are normal in the recovery process. Clotting occurs to promote healing and decrease the risk of dry sockets. Once the bleeding has decreased, the gauze can be removed. Some patients experience light bleeding for up to 24 hours.
How to care for my teeth after a tooth extraction?
Recovery will depend on the complexity of the tooth removal. Most people return to their normal routine within a few days. While most people return to their normal activities within 48 to 72 hours, it takes the jawbone several weeks to heal. We advise all patients following a tooth extraction to keep the extraction site clean, take all medications as directed, and avoid strenuous activity for at least two days.
